Halo Beriti, Yirgacheffe (Washed)

Halo Beriti Washing Station was established in 2014 and serves 750 smallholder producers, who deliver their coffee in cherry form. This particular lot is part of a "special preparation" in which hand-sorting was done repeatedly throughout the receiving and drying process, ensuring that only perfect coffees made it into the bags.

Coffees in Ethiopia are typically grown on very small plots of land by farmers who also grow other crops. The majority of smallholders will deliver their coffee in cherry to a nearby washing station or central processing unit, where their coffee will be sorted, weighed, and paid for or given a receipt. Coffee is then processed, usually washed or natural, by the washing station and dried on raised beds.

The washing stations at Ethiopia's Halo Beriti are a hub for hundreds, if not thousands, of cherry producers who deliver their crop throughout the harvest season. The blending of cherries into day lots may make it difficult to trace the exact source of the coffee, but we make every effort to source from the same washing stations each year through our export partners' connections. Unlike other regions, farmers here don't use pesticides or fertilisers, resulting in a delicately sweet and juicy coffee with notes of dried apricot, fresh peach, and panela.

Cultivated at elevations ranging from 1600 to 2400 masl, Yirgacheffe coffees benefit from the region’s rich vegetation, warm tropical climate, and sustainable organic farming practices. Shade-grown by small-scale producers, each cup reflects the unique terroir and craftsmanship of Ethiopia’s coffee heritage.

Ethiopia: The Birthplace of Arabica Coffee
Ethiopia holds legendary status in the coffee world as the origin of Arabica. Here, coffee is not merely a crop—it’s an integral part of life, cultivated for centuries in lush forests and smallholder “coffee gardens.” Unlike many coffee-producing nations, Ethiopia’s coffee traditions have thrived independently of colonial influence, resulting in a rich diversity of flavors and profiles.

Most Ethiopian coffee farmers are smallholders, cultivating less than 1 hectare of land, often surrounded by natural forest environments. This intimate, artisanal approach to coffee production yields remarkable quality and complexity in every harvest.
