Women-Owned and Empowered:
This lot is sourced exclusively from women-owned farms within the Abadatezuka Cooperative. Beyond the quality premium paid for the coffee, a dedicated premium is paid directly to these women, recognising and supporting their contribution to the coffee's excellence.

The Abadatezuka Cooperative:
Located in Rwanda’s Western Province, the Abadatezuka Cooperative consists of smallholder farmers who deliver their coffee cherries to the Cyato Washing Station. This station, established in 2017, is situated at 1,850 meters above sea level in the Nyamasheke district, with coffee grown at elevations reaching up to 2,200 meters. The high altitudes, fertile black humus and sandy soils, and cool climate influenced by nearby Lake Kivu create ideal conditions for growing exceptional coffee.

Processing and Craftsmanship:
Producers deliver only ripe, red cherries to the washing station. After meticulous sorting, the coffee undergoes a unique washed process that includes depulping, fermentation in open-air tanks for 12–18 hours, and an additional 24-hour soaking step. This technique, similar to methods used in Kenya, ensures clean and vibrant flavours. The beans are then carefully dried on raised beds, rotated regularly for uniformity.

The Unique Terroir:
The Cyato sector, near the Nyungwe Forest, offers a unique combination of fertile soils, natural honeybee pollination, and a lake-affected climate. These elements, combined with the absence of synthetic fertilizers or pest control, contribute to the coffee’s distinctive flavour profile.

Microlot Excellence:
Microlots like this one are the pinnacle of Rwandan coffee production. Traceable to the cooperative and washing-station level, these lots are selected for their exceptional cup quality and represent the highest standards of Rwandan specialty coffee.

The Bourbon Legacy:
This coffee features the Bourbon variety, a Typica-related natural mutation cultivated in Yemen and later brought to Île Bourbon (now Réunion Island). Known for its superior cup quality, Bourbon coffee thrives in the high altitudes and fertile conditions of Rwanda’s Western Province.
