Bali, Indonesia – Kintamani Highlands Indonesian Specialty Coffee

Bali, a small Indonesian province nestled between Java and Lombok, is famous for its stunning landscapes, rich culture, and vibrant Hindu traditions. Beyond the beaches and temples, the Kintamani highlands have become a hub for Indonesian specialty coffee, producing beans celebrated for their clarity, balance, and unique volcanic character.

History of Coffee in Bali

Coffee arrived in Bali in the late 1600s, but the island was historically overshadowed by larger Indonesian producers like Java and Sumatra. A devastating wave of coffee rust in the late 1800s destroyed much of the crop. It wasn’t until the early 1900s, with the introduction of the Timor hybrid, that coffee production began to recover. Today, smallholder farmers, organized in local cooperatives and guided by the Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana — which emphasizes harmony with God, people, and nature — cultivate coffee organically on plots around 1 hectare.

Growing Region and Processing

The Kintamani highlands, flanked by the Batukaru and Agung volcanoes, offer fertile volcanic soil, high altitude, and a consistent climate — perfect for growing S795 and Timor hybrid Arabica beans. Farmers carefully process coffee using washed and natural methods, highlighting the unique flavours that make Bali coffee distinct among Indonesian specialty coffees.

Harvest and Production

Coffee is harvested between May and October, with most beans arriving for export between September and December. Though a smaller producer compared to Java and Sumatra, Bali’s specialty coffee sector is expanding rapidly, with production increasing from 88 tons in 2020 to 155 tons in 2023.

Tasting Notes

Bali coffees are celebrated for their bright citrus and tropical fruit notes, balanced body, and clean, sweet finish. Ideal for espresso, pour-over, or batch brew, these beans showcase the volcanic terroir and meticulous care of Kintamani farmers.
