Bolivia – Caranavi & La Asunta Specialty Coffee

Bolivia, nestled in the Andes of South America, is emerging as a rising star in the world of Bolivian specialty coffee. The mountainous regions of La Paz, Caranavi, and La Asunta offer ideal conditions for growing Arabica beans, with high altitude, rich soils, and diverse microclimates that produce coffees of exceptional clarity, balance, and sweetness.

History of Coffee in Bolivia

Coffee arrived in Bolivia in the 18th century, likely brought by African enslaved people, but it remained a minor crop compared to coca leaves and other agriculture. By the late 20th century, increased global demand and initiatives to diversify crops led to the rise of specialty coffee production in regions like Caranavi and La Asunta. Today, approximately 12,000 farming families depend on coffee as their primary income, cultivating beans with care, precision, and respect for the environment.

Growing Regions and Processing

Bolivian specialty coffee is grown in microregions across La Paz, La Asunta, Caranavi, Cochabamba, and Teoponte. Farmers cultivate Typica and Red Catuai varieties on farms ranging from 1 to 8 hectares, using washed and natural processing methods. These dedicated producers focus on quality, sustainability, and innovation, producing microlots and certified coffees, including Organic, Fair Trade, and Bird-Friendly options.

Harvest and Production

Coffee is harvested from June to October, with beans typically arriving for export between January and April. While Bolivia’s coffee production has fluctuated over the years, the specialty sector is growing steadily, offering unique and consistent flavors that appeal to coffee enthusiasts worldwide.
